As the UX Principal Product Designer at Fractally, my role involved designing a new combined video, chat, and rank-order voting process. The key initial challenges included designing a mobile-first application featuring web-RTC-based video, text chat, and rank-choice voting. Similar to EdenOS, these features were incorporated into a playoff-style election process. I collaborated closely with the engineering team to ensure the design was compatible with Fractally's new Psibase blockchain.
Philosophy of Fractally
Fractally is dedicated to producing tools that autonomous communities need to flourish. These tools enable communities to create and distribute value that was previously unattainable. Traditional markets often fail to adequately recognize individuals who contribute public goods, such as music, art, science, independent journalism, charity, and open-source software. Fractally addresses this issue by leveraging the wisdom of crowds to build consensus and recognize each individual's contributions to the community.
The task was to design the front end of a new voting process, akin to EdenOS. However, instead of members advancing one member per group, members in groups of 5-6 would rank themselves based on their contributions to the community over the past week.
I revisited my research from our EdenOS project and collaborated with the development team to comprehend the functional parameters. After exploring different methods to display consensus: 1) Emojis, and 2) Consensus level dots, it became clear that simply stacking gave us all we needed.
While the engineering team focused on technical feasibility and functionality, I utilized the break in the schedule to develop a new 50+ component design system in Figma based on approved UI design components.
With the design system established, I created responsive, mobile-first designs, flows, and prototypes.
The design, prototype, and testing phases were completed in less than half the projected time, thanks to the design system. User testing provided useful feedback, and ease of use ranking was high enough to go live with the design.
